From the Editors: Collaborative Computing Community--Leveraging Single-User Applications for Multiuser Distributed Collaboration Haifeng Shen, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Chengzheng Sun, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Single-user interactive computer applications are pervasive in our work and daily lives. Commonly used single-user interactive applications include text editors such as Notepad and Emacs, word processors such as Office Word and OpenOffice Writer, spreadsheet tools such as Office Excel and OpenOffice Calculator, slide authoring and presentation tools such as Office PowerPoint and OpenOffice Impress, Web authoring tools such as FrontPage and Dreamweaver, CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Catia, and media creation tools such as Maya and 3D Studio Max. The choices for real-time collaborative applications, however, are limited. Most advanced real-time collaborative applications are research prototypes with limited functionalities and usability. The vast majority of existing commercial applications were

Leveraging Java Applets: Toward Collaboration Transparency in Java
W idespread use of the Internet is giving rise to the need for collaborative applications that link users at remote sites. Many toolkits support the development of collaboration-aware applications—those developed specifically for cooperative work by multiple users. Another approach is collaboration transparency—the collaborative use of applications originally developed for a single user. When t...
متن کاملCAMELOT: Technology Focused Testing of CSCW Applications
In this paper we describe CAMELOT, a novel technologyfocused methodology for testing collaborative software that contrasts with existing broad-based CSCW evaluation approaches. CAMELOT is intended for use by application developers, user interface specialists, performance engineers, and quality assurance personnel. The evaluation of a CSCW application is divided into two stages: single user and ...
متن کاملModeling Multiuser Interactions
Due to the growth of the Internet and the fact that more and more people have access to networked computers research on computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL) has gained importance. However development of CSCL environments is expensive. Developers need to consider e.g. distributed computing and team-building and content presentation. Even more difficult is the development of collabora...
متن کاملExploring Handheld, Agent-based, Multimodal Collaboration
Designing software for handheld computers is challenging because of their limited computing power, memory, display size, and the choices of hardware and operating systems. In addition to these challenges, collaborative handheld applications must deal with distributed computing and other network-related issues. We believe that by designing these applications as multimodal, multiagent systems, we...
متن کاملAn Editing-Based Characterization of the Design Space of Collaborative Applications
The design space of collaborative applications is characterized using the notion of generalized multiuser editing. Generalized multiuser editing allows users to view interactive applications as editors of data structures. It offers several collaboration functions, which allow users to collaboratively edit application data structures. These functions include coupling, concurrency control, access...
